A frequency deficiency in one ear scuppered young Simon’s dreams of being a radio studio manager – but studio management’s loss is the listening world’s gain. Honing his skills at Southlands Hospital Radio in West Sussex, Simon went on to work at BBC Radio Nottingham, before getting his first Breakfast Show in 1988 for Radio 1.
