Brexit, Fake News and More: The Daily Debate Series at AWE

As major issues in both the European and US political and economic arenas make their way into the advertising, marketing, tech and media communities, the industry is forced to address them head on. Whether it’s the proliferation of fake news, the debate between globalism or localism, politics, or even the battle for eyeballs between digital and print, the most pressing, prominent issues facing the world today will be discussed in-depth during a new series at Advertising Week Europe this March.

During AWE, The Week Live will present The Daily Debate – a series of fiery confrontations between industry experts that will directly address global issues such as Brexit, the US presidential election, the rise of fake news as a threat to responsible reporting, and more.

During the first Daily Debate, “Never Trust the Press,” panelists debate why it’s not just fake news and the spread of social media that have led many to distrust most of what is said about politics and the economy. Experts will explore whether the established press has forfeited its claim to accuracy and objectivity, or if consumers should still accord respect for the good faith of the major titles and trust and what they have to tell us.

The second Daily Debate, “The Slogan ‘Take Back Control’ Has a Con at its Heart,” will take a look at both Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign and how Brexit sold the notion of regaining national independence by taking back control from multinational bodies and unaccountable technocrats. Panelists will debate how in our ferociously interconnected world of complex trade deals, mobile capital and large scale immigration, isn’t that just one, big con?

The “Politics is Always Local” debate will tackle how few advertising campaigns work for a global audience. Why? Because advertisers know to tailor the sell to the audience, and they understand that local culture matters. Panelists will debate how, in cases like with the EU and other international arrangements beloved of economists and technocrats, their thinking is often too big.

Finally, during the fourth Daily Debate, “Keep it Real,” panelists will debate whether screens are better than paper, if virtual reality is more real than actual reality, and if it’s possible to argue that digital is draining the joy from the lived, the touched and the smelt experience. Some would say it’s the live event – one like Advertising Week – that matters most. Others would say digital has won the battle. Panelists will weigh in on whether we’ve overdone digital, or if we should instead focus on keeping things real.
